Megan Schutt's 10-Wicket ODI Series Puts T20I Comeback in Focus Ahead of New Zealand Series

Megan Schutt has turned a frustrating year on the fringes into the strongest possible argument for an immediate return to Australia’s T20I side. Left carrying drinks for much of the T20 World Cup in England earlier this year, the 33-year-old veteran right-arm pacer dismantled Bangladesh in the historic maiden home ODI series, claiming 10 wickets at 7.1 with an economy rate of 2.37, and now heads to Sydney with a compelling case to face New Zealand from 18th to 22nd October.

Australia’s 3-0 whitewash was emphatic in its margins: victories by seven wickets, nine wickets and eight wickets. Yet the most striking storyline was Schutt’s control. In the third ODI at Allan Border Field, she bowled all 10 of her overs in one uninterrupted spell, returning 4 for 16, including 53 dot balls. Bangladesh managed just 35 runs in the Powerplay as Schutt claimed three wickets, turning the new ball into an instrument of suffocation.

Stand-in captain Tahlia McGrath, leading Australia with regular skipper Sophie Molineux sidelined by a hip injury, had little hesitation in extending the spell. “She looked like she was going to take a wicket every over, and she wanted to keep going, and I wanted her to keep going,” McGrath said. “I just kept going over and saying, ‘How you going? You OK? You want to go again?’ And she was like, ‘Do not take me off’.”

That hunger mattered. Schutt had played only three of Australia’s six ODIs in 2026, while her lone appearance at the T20 World Cup reflected how quickly she had slipped down the pecking order. With Lucy Hamilton and Darcie Brown unavailable for the Bangladesh series, however, Schutt and Kim Garth carried the frontline pace responsibility across all three matches, and the veteran responded with a masterclass in accuracy, movement and relentless pressure.

McGrath’s praise went beyond the wickets. “You give the new ball to ‘Schutter ’, and you know she’s going to do a job for you; you know she’s going to either hold down an end or take poles, and she had an unbelievable series for us,” she said. “Bangladesh didn’t really stand too much of a chance with the new ball with her at the top of her mark; she just didn’t miss her length all three games.”

The rarity of Schutt’s workload underlined her physical and mental sharpness. In CricViz records dating back to 2012, only former England quick Katherine Sciver-Brunt had previously bowled 10 overs straight in a women’s ODI. For a bowler who had admitted after the series opener that she was uncertain about her T20I future, including next February’s T20 Champions Trophy in India from 14th to 28th February 2027, the performance was both a statement and a reassurance.

Megan Schutt’s case is strengthened by the evolution of her white-ball skill set. McGrath believes the WBBL’s Power Surge has sharpened her death bowling, adding another dimension to a career built on new-ball swing. “She swings the ball for fun; she’s unbelievable, but since the Surge has come in, her death plans have been enormous,” McGrath said. “She can bowl in any phase; you can throw the ball to her at any time, and she’s a real striker, a real weapon bowler.”

Australia now travel to Sydney for three T20Is against New Zealand at North Sydney Oval, with Molineux firming for a return and Phoebe Litchfield racing to overcome a low-grade hip strain. If both are fit, the 14-player squad is expected to feature just one change from the T20 World Cup-winning group, with Grace Harris omitted. Schutt is already named, but the question is whether she returns to the XI.

Lucy Hamilton’s return after a quad niggle creates direct competition, giving Australia a left-arm option and a glimpse of the next generation. But Schutt’s Bangladesh series offered something selectors cannot manufacture: proven match-winning rhythm, an insatiable appetite for the ball, and the ability to dominate both the Powerplay and the final overs.

“If she’s called upon in that New Zealand series, I reckon she’s going to play a pretty good role for us,” McGrath said. For a legendary quick who has spent much of the past 12 months in and out of the side, that may be exactly the opportunity she has earned.
