Australia’s newly crowned 7th-time T20 World Cup champions are refusing to let history slow them down. Skipper Sophie Molineux has declared that the world’s most successful women’s T20 side is still searching for its ceiling, as Australia prepare to face a rebuilt New Zealand in a three-match T20I series at North Sydney Oval from October 18 to 22, their only T20I assignment before February’s inaugural ICC Women’s T20 Champions Trophy in India.

Australia arrive in Sydney brimming with belief after a 3-0 whitewash of debutant visitors Bangladesh, led by skipper Nigar Sultana Joty in their historic, home ODI series from October 9 to 14, a series led by stand-in captain Tahlia McGrath while Molineux recovered from a hip injury. Now fit to lead again, Molineux wants her side to build on the fearless, high-tempo identity that powered them to a seventh T20 World Cup title at Lord’s in early July.

“I think we’re getting somewhere with how we want to play our cricket,” Molineux said in Sydney on Friday. “It showed when we were at the World Cup, and we played a really aggressive, free and exciting game of cricket over there. We found out that that works for us, and we just want to keep building on that.”

Australia’s World Cup triumph was not merely another trophy. They went through the tournament unbeaten, scored at a faster rate than in any of their previous T20 World Cup campaigns by a significant margin, and possessed the most economical bowling attack in the competition. Yet Molineux believes the best version of this team remains a work in progress.

“To be able to find that next level of freedom, we (still) don’t know what our limit is in terms of that,” she said. “We’re really excited by seeing how we can play our cricket and how that can evolve. Looking from a T20 point of view, we’ve got some massive tournaments coming up with the Champions Trophy and the Olympics and another T20 World Cup in the next couple of years, so there’s plenty of work to be done.”

The series carries immediate importance beyond the trans-Tasman rivalry. With the Champions Trophy in India running from February 14 to 28, 2027, these three matches represent Australia’s final competitive tune-up in the format before that global event. Molineux’s squad, featuring Ashleigh Gardner, Ellyse Perry, Beth Mooney, Alana King, Megan Schutt and Annabel Sutherland, blends experience with attacking depth, though Phoebe Litchfield remains in doubt with a hip niggle.

New Zealand, by contrast, arrive in a period of transition. After a group-stage exit at the T20 World Cup, the White Ferns have lost Sophie Devine, Suzie Bates and Lea Tahuhu, players who accumulated 425 T20I appearances between them, while head coach Ben Sawyer’s contract was not renewed. Interim coach Dean Brownlie now leads a 15-player squad averaging just 40 T20I caps per player, against Australia’s 67 across their 14-player group.

Captain Amelia Kerr, however, sees opportunity rather than vulnerability in the inexperience. “We’ve got a group that probably hasn’t played Australia too much, which I think it’s a good thing (because) you don’t have that trauma of playing Australia,” Kerr said. “They’re the same as us. They’ve got two legs, two arms, and they’re playing the sport, and we know that when we’re at our best, we’re capable of beating anyone in the world.”

Kerr’s side has already shown signs of a reset. Although New Zealand fell to a rain-affected 19-run DLS defeat against the Governor-General’s XI in their lone warm-up match, their captain was encouraged by the energy and intensity in the field, an area she identified as decisive in their World Cup disappointment.

“It was highlighted at the World Cup that our fielding wasn’t up to standard, and if we fielded better at that World Cup, we probably would have been in the semi-finals,” Kerr said. “Last night was great to get out there, and I thought the best thing was our fielding, the body language, the energy, and how we were in tricky conditions compared to how we were at the World Cup; it was real growth.”

There is also a larger prize at stake. New Zealand currently hold the fourth-ranked T20I position, 11 rating points clear of Sri Lanka, and occupies the provisional Olympic qualification place ahead of LA 2028. That position will be confirmed on March 1, 2027, the day of the Champions Trophy final, making every T20I between now and then consequential.

“It’s pretty exciting to think of all the cricket coming up for us and the opportunities we have,” Kerr said. “The Champions Trophy is going to be really important, and we’d love to be at the Olympics as well.”

Australia may be the benchmark, but New Zealand’s new era carries the unpredictability of a side with little to lose and plenty to prove. For Molineux, the challenge is to ensure her champions do not merely defend their standards, but redefine them.

I am Yash Tailor, and I believe work should be driven by passion. Therefore, after completing my Engineering, I chose to work in the Cricket industry, my passion. My goal is to reach a stage where I truly enjoy what I do and give my best to every task with energy and purpose.
