England all-rounder Jamie Overton is open to returning to Test cricket if captain Joe Root approaches him about playing in the 2027 Ashes. Speaking to BBC Sport, the 32-year-old has not ruled out a comeback, saying that his decision to step away from red-ball cricket was an indefinite break rather than retirement.

Overton last played Test cricket against India in July 2025, when the physical demands of the match left him struggling to recover. A history of stress fractures also influenced his decision to manage his workload and focus on white-ball cricket. He ruled himself out of England’s 2025-26 Ashes tour of Australia.

If Rooty Comes to Me… – Jamie Overton on Test Return

Jamie Overton revealed that England’s white-ball captain, Harry Brook, has asked him about returning to Test cricket on several occasions. However, he has not seriously considered the possibility so far.

“To be honest, I haven’t thought about it,” Jamie Overton said. “Brooky’s mentioned it to me a couple of times, but I’ve literally not thought about it. If Rooty comes to me and says that then, yeah, then I’ll have to have a serious think about it.”

“I’ve always said it was an indefinite break. People think I’ve retired or whatever, but, no, it was a break that I could focus on my white-ball cricket and being really good in my white-ball cricket.”

“I’ve never said I’ve ruled it out,” said Overton. “It’s just got to be the right thing at the right time. It’s been just over a year and I’ve been really structured with my workloads and my plans and getting my body into a good spot. I feel really good.”

I Felt Physically Broken – Jamie Overton

Jamie Overton’s second Test appearance against India in July 2025 proved physically demanding. Having played only four first-class matches in the previous two years, he had to bowl 38 overs after Chris Woakes suffered a dislocated shoulder, leaving England with only three frontline seamers.

“I came off that Test match against India and I felt physically broken,” he said. “I know we lost the bowler, Wokesey went down with a shoulder injury, but that’s the worst I felt in playing cricket for a long time.”

The workload also affected his preparations for The Hundred. Overton said it took him nearly two weeks to recover sufficiently to play, despite the much shorter bowling spells required in the competition. His shoulder remained sore, reinforcing his concerns about the risk of another injury.

“It nearly took me two weeks to get ready to play in The Hundred, when you only bowl 20 balls. My shoulder was incredibly sore for two weeks and it just felt like it was an injury waiting to happen if I kept trying to push myself.”

Jamie Overton Could Strengthen England’s Lower Order

England’s Test team has used four frontline seamers since Ben Stokes’ retirement, with Dan Lawrence batting at No. 6 and providing an off-spin option. A fit Overton could offer another way to balance the side through his ability to contribute with both bat and ball.

The all-rounder demonstrated his batting potential on his Test debut against New Zealand in 2022, scoring 97 in a valuable partnership with Jonny Bairstow. He has also amassed 2,410 runs in first-class cricket, including a career-best 120 against Warwickshire.

Overton’s bowling record further strengthens his case, with 239 first-class wickets to his name. He has also been part of three successive County Championship-winning campaigns with Surrey.

Meanwhile, his twin brother Craig Overton remains outside England’s current Test setup. Despite a strong summer for Somerset, Craig recently told BBC Sport that he had not been contacted by the England management about a possible recall.
