Ellyse Perry, 35, Continues to Chase Excellence as Sydney Sixers Begin WBBL 12 with a Thriller

At 35, Ellyse Perry remains cricket’s most compelling study in sustained excellence. Her unbeaten-in-spirit 58 from 38 balls against the Brisbane Heat at Allan Border Field on 30 October 2026 did more than launch Sydney Sixers’ Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 12 campaign with a four-wicket, last-ball victory; it reaffirmed that one of the sport’s greatest all-rounders is still chasing improvement with the intensity of a debutant.

Ellyse Perry opened alongside Sophia Dunkley in a chase of 155 and anchored it with seven boundaries and a six, sharing a decisive 53-run stand. Her innings blended control with intent, giving the Sixers the platform to complete a tense victory off the final delivery. For a player entering her 20th season, it was an emphatic statement that the standards have not softened.

“I just like to be a better version than what I am today, and that’s a challenge every day,” Perry said ahead of the season opener. “That’s really fun to take on, and you learn lots as you go, so, yeah, hopefully if or whenever I finish playing, I can be a better player than what I was when I started; that will be awesome.”

That mindset has defined a career of extraordinary range. A dual international who represented <a href="https://cricket.international/south-africa-dethrones-australia-to-become-no-1-test-side/” title=”South Africa dethrones Australia to become No.1 Test side”>Australia at a football World Cup with the Matildas before becoming cricket’s pre-eminent female all-rounder, Perry was the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Decade for 2011–2020 and a three-time world player of the year. She was also the first player, male or female, to record 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in T20 Internationals, while surpassing 3,000 runs and 150 wickets in ODIs.

Yet Perry refuses to frame longevity as an achievement in itself. “Oh, it’s pretty easy because there are so many great players around that it’s pretty hard to keep up most of the time,” she said. “The creativity among the younger players is phenomenal, and just seeing that is motivation in itself to try and keep pace, but also try and continue to contribute to whatever teams you’re a part of, and I love that.”

Her appetite for work remains strikingly unchanged. Perry says she spends as much time batting and bowling in the nets now as she did as a 16-year-old when she first represented Australia in 2007. “Batting for me, especially in the nets, is probably a little bit like meditation in a way,” she explained. “You don’t have your phone attached to you. You’re sort of down there by yourself just hitting balls. So I really enjoy that.”

The Sixers will need that calm under pressure throughout WBBL 12, which runs from 29 October to 5 December 2026. Last season, they finished second with 13 points from 10 games, six wins, three losses and a washout, before falling 11 runs short against Sophie Devine’s Perth Scorchers in the Challenger on 11 December 2025.

Perry, however, was the Sixers’ leading run-scorer in that 11th edition, compiling 412 runs at 51.50 with a strike rate of 141.09 across 10 innings, including two fifties and a century. Captain Ashleigh Gardner led the bowling attack with 19 wickets at 14.94 and an economy of 7.67, finishing as joint-highest wicket-taker alongside Melbourne Renegades’ Georgia Wareham.

The Sixers’ pedigree adds context to their ambitions: champions in WBBL 02 and WBBL 03, they became the first side to defend the title, while also finishing runners-up in 2015-16, 2018-19 and 2022. With Gardner winning the toss and choosing to bowl against Brisbane Heat, and Perry immediately delivering with the bat, Sydney’s pursuit of a third title has begun with familiar authority.

Next comes their first home fixture, against defending champions Hobart Hurricanes at Drummoyne Oval on 1 November. If opening night was any indication, Perry’s “better version” is already taking shape.

I am Yash Tailor, and I believe work should be driven by passion. Therefore, after completing my Engineering, I chose to work in the Cricket industry, my passion. My goal is to reach a stage where I truly enjoy what I do and give my best to every task with energy and purpose.
