India Women Moving Towards Dedicated T20I Team, Says Head Coach Amol Muzumdar

India women’s head coach Amol Muzumdar believes the team is moving steadily towards having a specialist T20I squad, much like the Indian men’s setup, with an exciting generation of young cricketers already equipped for the demands of the shortest format. Speaking at an event organized by the Sports Journalists’ Association of Mumbai (SJAM) on Saturday, Muzumdar offered a confident assessment of the talent pipeline and the direction in which Indian women’s cricket is headed.

Asked how soon India could field a dedicated T20I group, Muzumdar was unequivocal. “Not long,” he said. “We’re already on that path. There’s some amazing talent coming through. The talent I’ve seen at the CoE, where they hold the India Under-15 and U-19 camps, is terrific. The work at the CoE is superb. The camps are a good reflection of where Indian women’s cricket is at the moment. I’m sure it’s in a healthy state.”

For Muzumdar, the difference lies not merely in skill but in preparation. The next generation, he believes, has grown up with a sharper understanding of what modern T20 cricket demands, from power-hitting and tactical awareness to athletic fielding and professional lifestyle management. “They are tuned in. They are professionals. Even the U-15 players are professionals. They understand the nutrition aspect of the game. They understand the fitness aspect of the game. They understand fielding. They’re terrific fielders. They’re good athletes. They understand that athleticism is key in cricket,” Muzumdar said.

His optimism carries particular weight at a time when Indian women’s cricket is entering a new leadership phase. Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down as all-format captain on October 6, with Smriti Mandhana appointed later that evening. Mandhana’s first assignment as full-time skipper, a historic maiden white-ball series against Zimbabwe, ended with India completing a 3-0 whitewash in both the T20I and ODI legs.

Amol Muzumdar, who spent three years working closely with Harmanpreet, spoke warmly about the outgoing captain while embracing the transition. “I had a very good time with Harman as a captain. But I’m also looking forward to the future. With utmost respect, the manner in which she conducted herself as a captain, as a skipper, was superb,” he said. “I feel myself really lucky that I had that opportunity for the three years that I spent with her as a coach.”

The timing feels significant. A year after India lifted their maiden senior ICC title, defeating Laura Wolvaardt’s South Africa by 52 runs in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup final at the DY Patil Stadium on November 2, 2025, the focus has shifted from breakthrough to consolidation. Muzumdar believes the foundation of that historic triumph was not just skill, but the environment within the squad.

“If I have to pinpoint just one, then I think the unity in the camp and the dressing room atmosphere. Because of that unity, the dressing room atmosphere was very light. There was a little bit of a buzz around in the dressing room, which I love to create,” he said. That philosophy is rooted in his own playing years. Recalling successful Mumbai teams of the 1990s, Muzumdar said the energy in those dressing rooms shaped his understanding of winning cultures, something he now hopes to pass on to this Indian side.

Beyond talent identification, Muzumdar emphasised the human side of coaching. He looks for receptiveness in players, often reading body language before offering guidance, and believes timing is as important as instruction. “As a coach, you need to understand when to say, how to say and what to say,” he explained.

With India set to host the inaugural ICC Women’s T20 Champions Trophy from February 14 to 28, 2027, and the next generation already making its presence felt, Muzumdar’s vision is clear: build depth, sustain unity, and play with an edge.

“Dominance is something that we have always spoken about within the squad. Being ruthless on the ground is another thing that we have always maintained,” he said. “If we start dominating world cricket, I would be happy.”
