Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s next match: Gautam Gambhir’s latest remarks spell more waiting

Fresh uncertainty has emerged over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s next opportunity for India after Gautam Gambhir made it clear that the teenage batter will have to wait for his chance. The India head coach said players who have performed consistently over a longer period will remain ahead of Sooryavanshi, despite the 15-year-old’s impressive performances for India in recent months.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi did not play a single match during India’s 3-0 T20I series win over Afghanistan, with <a href="https://cricket.international/abhishek-sharma-has-more-talent-than-yuvraj-singh-claims-ex-pakistan-star/" title="<a href="https://cricket.international/i-dont-want-to-restrict-any-area-abhishek-sharma-reveals-secret-behind-fearless-batting/" title="“I don’t want to restrict any area”: Abhishek Sharma reveals secret behind fearless batting”>Abhishek Sharma has more talent than Yuvraj Singh, claims ex-Pakistan star”>Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson retained as the opening combination throughout. The decision came after Sooryavanshi had scored 151 runs in three T20Is against Zimbabwe and won the Player of the Series award.

What did Gautam Gambhir say about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s India future?

Gautam Gambhir was asked about Sooryavanshi’s position in the Indian team after the teenager remained on the bench throughout the Afghanistan series. The coach explained that India are aware of his talent but want him to wait for his opportunity, with established players currently ahead of him in the pecking order.

“From Vaibhav’s point of view, it was again a very clear conversation that he has to wait for his opportunity. We know the kind of talent he has. We know what he can do. But again, someone who has done extremely well over a period of two years, obviously, he will always be ahead of someone who is just quite into the team. So, whenever he gets that run, he will get a longer run as well. And that is what Indian cricket is all about,” Gautam Gambhir said.

“We want competition. We want that talent in the dressing room. But sometimes, that’s how cricket goes, whether you’re a 15-year-old or a 30-year-old. When you have to wait for your opportunity, you have to wait for your opportunity.”

What do Gautam Gambhir’s remarks mean for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s future?

Gautam Gambhir’s comments suggest that Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are currently the preferred opening combination in India’s T20I setup. Both were backed throughout the Afghanistan series and finished as India’s leading run-scorers, while Sooryavanshi remained on the sidelines.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has played six T20Is for India so far. He made his international debut against England in July 2026, featuring in three matches, before returning to the XI for all three T20Is against Zimbabwe. He scored 151 runs in the Zimbabwe series at a strike rate of 196.10 and was named Player of the Series. He did not feature against Afghanistan.

That means the teenager is currently behind Abhishek and Samson for the opening slots. Unless either of the two established openers is rested, unavailable through injury or falls out of favour after a prolonged run of poor form, Sooryavanshi’s immediate opportunities could remain limited.

However, Gambhir has also promised that once the youngster gets his opportunity, he will be given a longer run. Therefore, his current situation does not necessarily indicate a permanent setback, but rather a wait for a suitable opening in the team.

When can Vaibhav Sooryavanshi feature in India Playing XI?

The first possible opportunity for Sooryavanshi comes on September 22, when India are scheduled to play Japan in a one-off T20I at Sano. Sooryavanshi is part of the squad for that match, making it the earliest possible point for him to return to the playing XI. However, his selection is not guaranteed, particularly after Gambhir’s latest comments.

India will then compete in the Asian Games, with their men’s cricket quarter-final scheduled for September 28. Sooryavanshi is part of the Asian Games squad as well, giving him another potential opportunity during the competition.

After the Asian Games, India’s next T20I assignment is the five-match home series against West Indies. The matches will be played in Lucknow on October 6, Ranchi on October 9, Indore on October 11, Hyderabad on October 14 and Bengaluru on October 17.

If Sooryavanshi does not feature against Japan or in the Asian Games, the West Indies series could provide another window. India then travel to New Zealand for five T20Is from October 22 to November 1, followed by a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka from December 22 to 27.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could therefore play his next match against Japan, in the Asian Games or during the West Indies series, but his return to India’s XI will depend heavily on the availability and selection of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson.
