When CSK were banned from IPL: Full story behind their two-year suspension

Why Did the Lodha Committee Ban Chennai Super Kings For Two Years?

The Supreme Court appointed the three-member Lodha Committee, headed by former Chief Justice of India R.M. Lodha, in January 2015 to decide the punishment in the IPL betting case. On July 14, 2015, the committee suspended Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals from the IPL for two years.

The committee held that the franchises were responsible for the conduct of their officials under the applicable IPL rules. Since Gurunath Meiyappan was found to be a CSK team official and was involved in betting activities, the committee held the franchise accountable.

The committee also imposed life bans on Meiyappan and Raj Kundra from involvement in cricket matches and cricket administration. The decision followed wider findings into betting and corruption during the 2013 IPL season.

Chennai and Rajasthan missed the 2016 and 2017 IPL seasons. The BCCI brought in Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions as replacement teams for those two editions.
