India win First Gold at Asian Games 2026: Women’s Cricket Team clinch Championship with dominating Win

India clinched the women’s cricket gold medal at the Asian Games 2026, defeating Sri Lanka in a commanding final at Korogi Sports Park, Nisshin.

With a convincing win by 147 runs, the Indian women’s team have successfully defended their gold medal from Hangzhou and create history at Aichi-Nagoya this year.

Harmanpreet Kaur‘s side produced a superb all-round performance after posting a formidable 216/3 in 20 overs, the highest-ever total in women’s cricket at the Asian Games.

Smriti Mandhana led the charge with a spectacular 79 off 45 balls, smashing five fours and seven sixes. She also became the first woman cricketer to reach 11,000 international runs during the innings. Mandhana and Shafali Verma gave India a flying start, adding 99 runs for the opening wicket, with Shafali contributing 48 off 29 balls.

Richa Ghosh then provided a stunning finish, smashing an unbeaten 49 off just 22 balls, including a 25-run final over, as India surged past 200.

Sri Lanka’s chase collapsed under relentless Indian bowling. Chamari Athapaththu made 29 before falling to Deepti Sharma, while Shreyanka Patil, Deepti and Shree Charani continued to strike at regular intervals. Sri Lanka were reduced to 55/7 after 11.5 overs, leaving India firmly in control.

Shreyanka Patil finished it off as Sri Lanka were bowled out for just 69 runs. Deepti Sharma picked up three wickets, while Shreyanka, Shree Charani and Shafali Verma picked up two wickets each.

Harmanpreet Kaur and company have been head and shoulders above their counterparts in this competition and were the overwhelming favourites for the gold medal.

The victory sees India retain the Asian Games women’s cricket gold medal, following their triumph at Hangzhou 2023.
