India have found themselves in a real spot of bother in their one-off T20I match against Japan. The rain-marred encounter has been reduced to a 5-over game, and the Indian team are struggling with the bat, as they are 14/3 in the third over.
The match has been reduced to just five overs per side because of a wet outfield, with India captain Shreyas Iyer opting to bat first after winning the toss. However, the shortened contest began poorly for the visitors.
Opener Abhishek Sharma, who had smashed a record-breaking century in India’s previous T20I title=”Dottin to miss white-ball series against Zimbabwe; Henry returns from injury”>series against Afghanistan, was dismissed for a first-ball duck. He was caught by Shoma Sugaya-Slater off the bowling of Charlie Hara-Hinze, leaving India at 7/1 after six balls.
Sanju Samson briefly provided some momentum, hitting one boundary during his seven-ball stay. However, the wicketkeeper-batter was dismissed for 9 off 7 balls, caught by Benjamin Ito-Davis off Ibrahim Takahashi. India were reduced to 9/2 after 1.2 overs.
Ishan Kishan then joined Iyer at the crease, but India struggled to accelerate despite the limited number of overs. Kishan was unbeaten on 3 off 5 balls, while Iyer had scored 1 off 2 deliveries when rain again interrupted play.
Takahashi and Hara-Hinze had claimed one wicket each for Japan, who made an impressive early impact against the strong Indian batting line-up. Ishan Kishan has also departed and India were 14/3 after three overs. Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma couldn’t play their usual game as India have finished with 32/4 in their quota of five overs.
