Bangladesh women’s cricket returned home without a medal from the Asian Games in Japan after a campaign marked by disappointing results, uncertainty over leadership and growing pressure within the dressing room. Head coach Sarowar Imran suggested that negative reports surrounding the team, combined with uncertainty over the futures of key personnel, affected the players’ performances before the side’s 31-run defeat to Pakistan in the bronze-medal match at Korogi Sports Park, Nisshin, on September 22.
Nigar Sultana Joty’s team had earlier suffered a 114-run defeat to Harmanpreet Kaur-led India in the second semi-final on September 20. Their quarter-final against China was washed out, ending Bangladesh’s hopes of progressing further in the fourth edition of the tournament, held from September 17 to 22.
The result extended a difficult period for Bangladesh. In the sixth edition of the ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup, hosted by the United Arab Emirates from August 28 to September 13, Bangladesh finished second in Group B before losing the first semi-final to India by 40 runs on September 10.
Nigar Sultana Joty had announced before the Asian Games that she would step down as Bangladesh’s T20I captain, explaining that the decision was intended to help her focus on her own game. However, Imran indicated that the decision came amid increasing uncertainty around the team management and reports that changes were imminent.
“You know who holds the primary responsibility of our failure better than I do,” Imran told reporters after the defeat to Pakistan. “We weren’t in this state before. We played in World Cups under entirely different circumstances. Now, everything has suddenly shifted.” According to Imran, the team’s decline began during the Asia Cup after a narrow defeat to Sri Lanka. He claimed that a wave of criticism and speculation followed, eventually affecting Bangladesh’s confidence during the Asian Games.
“Our problem actually started back in the Asia Cup,” he said. “Ever since that loss, various kinds of reports and rumours have been coming out from different places… to the point that we couldn’t even score 120-130 against teams like Indonesia and the UAE. We are still carrying that exact slump into the Asian Games.”
Imran also questioned the timing of discussions about possible changes to the coaching staff and captaincy. With his two-year contract due to expire in October and David Hemp reportedly the frontrunner to replace him, the coach argued that uncertainty could not be separated from the team’s performances. “Suppose it is being said about me that I won’t be retained, he won’t be retained, and things like that,” he said. “In the middle of a tournament, you have sidelined the head coach and the captain, so how can you expect results?”
The Bangladesh Cricket Board has since said it will issue Imran a show-cause notice over his comments. BCB director Rafiq Ahmed rejected the coach’s claims, insisting that the board had never asked Nigar to relinquish the captaincy and had continued to support the players.
“We did not expect this kind of dishonesty from Imran Bhai,” Rafiq told Cricbuzz. “We actually encouraged them further. We ensured their facilities. They will now get business-class tickets, their match fees have been increased, and we have encouraged them in so many ways.”
Rafiq also denied that the board had formally discussed Imran’s future with him, although he acknowledged that Hemp was expected to take charge after the coach’s contract expires. Current batting coach Nasiruddin Faruque is also reportedly set to leave, with Hemp likely to oversee the batting department.
Imran, meanwhile, argued that the problems extend beyond one tournament or one coaching appointment. He said Bangladesh lacked a reliable pathway for young female cricketers, pointing to the absence of school cricket, Under-18 competitions, women’s high-performance programmes and dedicated training facilities.
“Look at Sri Lanka: school cricket is thriving there with hundreds of girls’ schools competing,” Imran said. “We don’t have any structure like that. There are no new players coming through; we can barely find 30 players total when we need to call up a squad.”
The Asian Games campaign has therefore left Bangladesh facing questions not only about leadership and coaching, but also about the foundations of its women’s cricket programme. As the BCB prepares to determine Imran’s future, the team must also decide whether the latest setback represents a temporary loss of form, or evidence of deeper structural unrest.
