'I Thought About My Process': Sobhana Mostary Opens Up on Historic ODI Hundred

Sobhana Mostary’s maiden ODI century was a landmark achievement for Bangladesh women’s cricket, and a rare bright spot in a heavy defeat. The 24-year-old struck 118 from 134 balls, with 18 boundaries, against Australia at Allan Border Field in Brisbane on 11 October 2026, rescuing Bangladesh from an early collapse and setting several national records.

Batting first, Bangladesh were in deep trouble when Mostary arrived at No. 5: three wickets had fallen for just eight runs in 7.2 overs. She responded with patience and intent, building her innings around the strengths she trusted. After opening with a push through the covers off Megan Schutt, she found the boundary repeatedly against Georgia Wareham, then drove Alana King through the off side on her way to a 66-ball half-century.

“I thought about my batting style after the way I got out in the first ODI. I just realised how I can bat deep. I thought about my process. I went out there and played to my strength,” Mostary said after the match. “I am so happy about my century. I batted against a world <a href="https://cricket.international/smith-rattled-by-stinging-bouncer-aussie-champion-being-assessed/” title=”Smith rattled by stinging bouncer; Aussie champion being assessed”>champion team.”

Her hundred, reached in the 45th over, made her the first Bangladeshi woman to score an ODI century against Australia and the first from her country to achieve the feat on Australian soil. The 118 was also the highest individual score by a Bangladeshi woman in ODIs, surpassing Fargana Hoque’s 107 against India in Mirpur in 2023. Mostary became just the third Bangladeshi woman to make an ODI hundred. It was her 107th international match.

The innings was not a solo rescue. Captain Nigar Sultana Jyoti provided calm support, scoring 74 from 114 balls, including seven fours, as the pair put on 195 for the fourth wicket. It became Bangladesh’s highest partnership for any wicket in women’s ODIs and their highest against Australia. “Captain Joti told me to just stay out there, at least till the 40th over. Afterwards, we can maybe play our shots,” Mostary said. “We looked out for the bad ball, which we punished. We had to respect the good ball.” She added that Jyoti kept reminding her she was capable of reaching a hundred.

The partnership reflected a clear plan: rebuild first, then look for chances to accelerate. Mostary said the pair focused on batting out the full 50 overs and playing each delivery on its merit. At the second drinks break, coach David Hemp urged them to bat at least until the 42nd over before turning more attacking. The approach helped Bangladesh reach 220/6, their highest ODI total against Australia.

The result, however, went Australia’s way. Tahlia McGrath won the toss and chose to field, and Australia chased down the target to win by nine wickets on the back of Georgia Voll’s unbeaten century of 131* (97 balls). They had already won the first ODI by seven wickets, sealing the three-match series with one match remaining. Still, Mostary’s century gave Bangladesh a milestone to take from their historic first bilateral ODI series on Australian soil, and a performance that could strengthen her confidence at the highest level.

The third ODI is scheduled for 14 October at Allan Border Field, Brisbane, with play beginning at 9:20 AM IST.
