The India National Cricket Team will be up against the West Indies National Cricket Team in a three-match ODI series. Ahead of the first match, which is scheduled to take place at the Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram, bowling coach Morne Morkel has shared his insights on having experienced players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja in the team.
Ahead of the 1st ODI, the Men in Blue have been struck with an injury as their captain Shubman Gill was struck on his elbow by a delivery from Mohammed Siraj and left the nets in pain. The team management will hope that it is not a serious injury, as he is a crucial player and also the captain of the side.

Bowling coach Morne Morkel, while speaking to the media, revealed that it is great to have experienced players in the team. As Morkel’s experience here means Virat and Rohit, he believes that they can also help Shubman Gill, who has been a young leader and has led the side well. However, the former South African pacer is a firm believer that senior players shape the team.
Morkel stated that, “Yeah, look, I mean, it’s always great to have that experience back in the team, you know, just to guide Shubman as well. I must say Shubman has done an exceptional job so far leading the team.”
“But I’m always a big believer in your senior players and how they shape the team. I think different players in the team will feel more comfortable speaking to a certain senior individual. And, you know, we’re quite fortunate that we’ve got a lot of experience in that.”

Morkel further added that if Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are having a conversation, it has very good meaning to it, as it would be great for the team as well. He feels that the management and also the current young players of the team are fortunate enough to share the dressing room with Virat Kohli and Rohit, as they are always ready to share their experiences.
“So, if Virat or Rohit is leading the conversation, there’s a lot of game time and a lot of experience in those conversations that can only be great for the team. So, yeah, we’re quite fortunate that we’ve got that experience with the senior players. And for us, it’s just to keep on challenging the guys to have conversations with the senior players.”

Morne Morkel said the management always wants the younger players to interact with senior stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, seek their advice, and learn from their experience, especially during net sessions and team meetings, as it will be great for the team and for them as well.
He concluded, saying, “You know, we will always throw out as many questions as possible in team meetings for the senior guys to speak and share their experience. But the challenge is to sometimes ask a younger guy, while they’re batting in the nets, to pick Virat’s brain or speak to Rohit about what is important with the new ball up front.”
“So, yeah, the more opportunities we can create for conversation, you know, with these guys, it will be great for us.”
