India captain Shubman Gill has offered a reassuring update on his recurring neck downside ahead of the three-match ODI collection in opposition to New Zealand. Shubman Gill’s neck has troubled him on several events during the last two years, with the most serious episode occurring through the first Test in opposition to <a href="https://cricket.international/australia-womens-maiden-tour-of-south-africa-rescheduled-ahead-of-champions-trophy-2027/" title="Australia Ladies's Maiden Tour of South Africa Rescheduled Ahead of Champions Trophy 2027″>South Africa in November 2025.

Shubman Gill addressed the priority through the pre-match press conference ahead of India’s first ODI in opposition to New Zealand. The India captain was requested about his neck after stories emerged that he had obtained a massage following a coaching session in Auckland.

The India skipper clarified that he had no issue during his batting or fielding work. His feedback will come as a aid for the Indian staff, considering the time he spent away from international cricket following his neck damage.

“No situation… I batted for close to at least one and a half hours and did my fielding with none hassle too. No situation in any respect,” Gill said.

Gill’s latest update comes after a history of neck-related setbacks. He has missed several matches since 2024 because of neck points. He returned to international cricket after rehabilitation, however an analogous situation resurfaced during IPL 2026.

Axar Patel and KL Rahul given flexible role in batting order

Shubman Gill also discussed India’s batting combination ahead of the ODI collection. The captain indicated that the staff would undertake a versatile method for the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, with Axar Patel and KL Rahul more likely to be thought of in line with the match situation.

India’s high 4 are all right-handed batters, which could make a left-handed choice helpful in certain conditions. Gill explained that Axar could be promoted when the staff wants a left-hander, while Rahul could also transfer up the order relying on the circumstances.

“We can have floating method for no.5 and no.6. Our high 4 is set, all right-handers. So if lefty is required, Axar bhai goes and relying on match situation even KL bhai can go. So bit flexible,” Gill said.

The India captain also explained why the staff cannot field its strongest combination for entire ODI collection in opposition to New Zealand.

“Had ODIs occurred before T20Is, we could have performed full strength all games. But turnaround time was much less between Exams and ODIs… and WTC table is very attention-grabbing now,” he added.

Shubman Gill’s recurring neck damage explained

Gill’s neck problems date again to July 2024, when he missed India’s second T20I in opposition to Sri Lanka because of a neck spasm. He was also unavailable for the first Test in opposition to New Zealand in Bengaluru in October 2024 because of neck stiffness.

Essentially the most serious episode occurred through the first Test in opposition to South Africa at Eden Gardens in November 2025. Gill experienced discomfort while batting in India’s second innings and retired damage after facing solely three deliveries. He was taken to hospital for medical evaluation and subsequently missed the second Test as well as the ODI collection in opposition to South Africa.

In December 2025, Gill explained the character of the problem during an interview ahead of India’s T20I collection in opposition to South Africa. He revealed that he had suffered a cervical disc bulge that was urgent in opposition to nerves. He underwent rehabilitation on the BCCI Centre of Excellence before returning to international cricket.

The problem resurfaced during IPL 2026, when Gill missed Gujarat Titans’ match in opposition to Rajasthan Royals because of a neck spasm. He returned for the next sport in opposition to Delhi Capitals and described the problem as “something similar” when requested about his previous damage.
