The BCCI is preparing for some big changes in India’s selection setup as Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as <a href="https://cricket.international/from-rohit-sharma-to-vvs-laxman-key-reasons-behind-ajit-agarkars-exit-as-chief-selector-2/" title="From Rohit Sharma to VVS Laxman: Key reasons behind Ajit Agarkar’s exit as chief selector“>chief selector is almost over. While Agarkar reportedly wanted to continue until the 2027 ODI World Cup, the BCCI did not discuss an extension with him, and Parthiv Patel comes into the picture.

During the BCCI AGM on September 18, an interesting plan was also discussed involving VVS Laxman. The board considered giving Laxman the dual responsibility of heading the Centre of Excellence (CoE) and leading the senior selection panel.

However, the idea was later dropped because of conflict-of-interest rules. Earlier, Ex-India opener questions Auqib Nabi’s selection for IND vs WI ODI series.

BCCI considered VVS Laxman for the dual role

VVS Laxman has been successfully working as the head of the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) and has played an important role in developing young Indian cricketers.

Some BCCI officials reportedly felt his experience could help connect the development system with senior-team selection.

But the plan had to be dropped because of the Lodha Committee reforms. The conflict-of-interest rules do not allow one person to hold two major positions with such influence within the BCCI structure.

As a result, the board decided not to go ahead with the plan as reported by a Jagran News journalist, Abhishek Tripathi. Amid this, Suryakumar Yadav set to part ways with RISE Worldwide amid Mumbai Indians speculation.

BCCI had no plans to extend Ajit Agarkar’s tenure; Parthiv Patel now leads the race

He also claimed that Ajit Agarkar wanted to continue as the chief selector, but he didn’t get any signal from the BCCI officials over his desire, so he had himself decided to not ask for an extension.

The journalist further shared that BCCI was against extending Agarkar’s tenure as the senior selection committee head, and even a single official has discussed this matter with him.

With Laxman now staying at the CoE, former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel has emerged as the leading name for the chief selector’s position. His IPL scouting experience and knowledge of young talent could now make him the new chief selector.

Parthiv Patel could become most experienced selector after Ajit Agarkar’s exit

If Parthiv Patel replaces Ajit Agarkar, the former wicketkeeper, who played 25 tests, would be the most experienced member of the panel. SS Das played 23 tests, Pragyan Ojha played 24 tests, RP Singh played 14 tests and Ajay Ratra represented the country only in six red-ball games.

The BCCI has not confirmed the move, but clarity is expected in the coming weeks. Agarkar recently selected India’s ODI and T20I squads for the West Indies and the Rest of India team for the Irani Cup. There is now strong speculation that it could have been his final selection meeting.

Agarkar was also seen in Delhi during the India-Afghanistan T20I series with RP Singh and Ajay Ratra. The second game was attended by Jay Shah, Mithun Manhas and Rajeev Shukla. After the AGM, Shukla said BCCI office-bearers are authorised to decide on selectors.

Agarkar also missed a major review meeting involving BCCI officials, Gautam Gambhir, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer and VVS Laxman, but the board downplayed the matter.
