Cricket South Africa has named an 18-player Under-19 Women’s squad for an extended national training camp in Durban and Pietermaritzburg from 18 September to 1 October, marking a pivotal step in the Junior Proteas’ build-up to the third edition of the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup, to be co-hosted by Bangladesh and Nepal in 2027. Led by captain Mieke van Voorst, the group will play a series of T20 matches as they sharpen skills, test combinations, and deepen their understanding of the demands awaiting them on the global stage.
The camp arrives at a time when the stakes for age-group women’s cricket have never been higher. India, under Shafali Verma, set the benchmark by winning the inaugural title in 2023, beating Grace Scrivens’ England by seven wickets in the final at Potchefstroom. Two years later, Niki Prasad’s India defended the crown in Kuala Lumpur, overcoming Kayla Reyneke’s South Africa by nine wickets in the 2025 final to secure a second title.
For South Africa, the journey has been one of steady progression: after finishing fourth in the 2023 league stage with six points from four games (three wins, one loss) under Oluhle Siyo, the Reyneke-led side topped Group 2 in 2025 with seven points from four matches (three wins, one washout) and reached the final by edging Australia by five wickets in the first semi-final.
“This camp is another important step in our preparation for the World Cup and gives us an opportunity to continue building on the work we have done with this group over the past few months,” said head coach Dinesha Devnarain. With two weeks together and match practice built into the schedule, Devnarain sees a clear pathway to refining game plans and synergy. “Having two weeks together, along with the chance to play T20 matches, allows us to keep developing our game plans, synergy and understanding of what will be required at the World Cup.”
The squad blends continuity with fresh competition. Alongside van Voorst, the group features rising star and recently capped Proteas Women wicketkeeper-batter Jae-Leigh Filander, whose elevation underscores the bridge between age-group and senior cricket. Miya Lalor, Respect Mabasa, Melissa van der Merwe and Ashleigh van Wyk have also been selected after impressing during South Africa U19 Women’s winter tour of Pakistan in July, rewarding form and adaptability in unfamiliar conditions.
Devnarain emphasised depth and progression as key themes. “We have a good mix of players who have been part of the programme for some time and others who continue to put their hands up through the pathway,” she said. “The crucial thing for us is to keep creating opportunities, building depth and making sure the players are progressing as we move closer to Bangladesh and Nepal.” That progression will be tested in the camp’s unofficial T20s, where selection pressure and role clarity can be fine-tuned ahead of the 2027 tournament.
