Sydney Sixers Women registered a dominant 87-run victory over Hobart Hurricanes Women in the seventh match of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2026 at Sydney on November 1. Captain Ashleigh Gardner delivered a sensational batting performance, smashing a magnificent 124 off just 60 deliveries, while Alice Capsey provided valuable support with an unbeaten 54. Their outstanding partnership helped the Sixers post a formidable 196/8 in 20 overs. In response, the Hurricanes struggled against a disciplined bowling attack and were bundled out for 109 in 17.4 overs, handing the Sixers a convincing victory.

After being asked to bat first, Sydney Sixers endured an early collapse as Chinelle Henry made an immediate impact with the new ball. Sophia Dunkley was the first to depart, scoring a two-ball duck after being caught by Chamari Athapaththu in the opening over at 0/1. Elllyse Perry followed shortly afterwards, managing just three runs off five deliveries before being caught by Maddy Smith off Nicola Carey’s bowling at 4/2 in 1.2 overs.

The early setbacks continued as Melie Kerr departed for one run off three balls, with Henry claiming her second wicket after Maddy Green completed the catch. The Sixers found themselves struggling at 6/3 in just 2.3 overs, putting the responsibility on captain Ashleigh Gardner to rebuild the innings.

Gardner joined Alice Capsey at the crease, and the pair produced a remarkable batting partnership that completely transformed the contest. Showing tremendous composure alongside an aggressive approach, Gardner took charge of the scoring while Capsey provided excellent support from the other end. The duo stitched together a massive 176-run fourth-wicket partnership, taking the Sixers from 6/3 to 182/4.

Gardner was unstoppable during her innings, bringing up a spectacular century and continuing to attack the Hurricanes’ bowling lineup. She eventually departed for a breathtaking 124 off 60 deliveries, smashing 10 boundaries and nine sixes at a strike rate of 206.66. Heather Graham provided the breakthrough in the 17.4th over, with Athapaththu completing the catch to end Gardner’s memorable knock.

Capsey continued her impressive contribution, reaching an unbeaten 54 off 40 deliveries, which included five boundaries and one six. However, the Sixers lost wickets in quick succession towards the end of their innings. Eva Ragg scored three off four balls before being caught by Henry off Carey’s bowling at 187/5. Erin Burns was dismissed for a duck in the following over, trapped lbw by Carey, leaving the Sixers at 188/6.

Lauren Cheatle managed just one run off three deliveries before being caught by Maddy Smith off Molly Strano’s bowling at 189/7. Sarah Coyte also departed for a duck, caught by Smith off Strano, as the Sixers slipped to 189/8 in 19.2 overs. Capsey remained unbeaten alongside Camoimhe Bray, who scored one off one delivery, while the Sixers finished their innings at an impressive 196/8 in 20 overs, setting Hobart Hurricanes a challenging target of 197 runs.

Nicola Carey was the pick of the Hobart Hurricanes bowlers, claiming three wickets for 31 runs in her four overs. Chinelle Henry and Molly Strano picked up two wickets apiece, conceding just eight and 32 runs respectively. Heather Graham also contributed with one wicket, although she proved expensive, giving away 44 runs in four overs. Isabella Malgioglio conceded 18 runs in two overs, while Hayley Silver-Holmes and Lauren Smith went wicketless, conceding 32 and 29 runs respectively.

Chasing 197, Hobart Hurricanes Women needed a strong start but immediately found themselves under pressure against the Sixers’ bowling attack. Lauren Cheatle provided the first breakthrough, dismissing Lizelle Lee for five off 14 deliveries after the batter was caught by Cheatle herself?

Chamari Athapaththu and Rachel Trenaman attempted to steady the innings, but Camoimhe Bray struck twice to put the Hurricanes on the back foot. Athapaththu scored 10 off 13 balls, including a boundary and a six, before being caught by Erin Burns. Trenaman followed without scoring, bowled by Bray, leaving Hobart struggling at 17/2 in 4.6 overs.

The situation worsened when captain Nicola Carey departed for just one run off four deliveries, bowled by Ashleigh Gardner, at 17/4 in 5.6 overs. Heather Graham managed only four off six balls before Melie Kerr dismissed her in the eighth over, reducing the Hurricanes to 26/5.

Maddy Green attempted to fight back with an unbeaten 42 off 33 deliveries, striking four boundaries, but found little support from the other end. Chinelle Henry provided some resistance with an attacking 32 off 20 balls, including five boundaries, and the pair added 52 runs for the sixth wicket, taking Hobart from 26/5 to 78/6.

However, Gardner returned to break the partnership, bowling Henry in the 13.4th over at 78/6. Hayley Silver-Holmes scored two before being run out through a combined effort from Bray and Gardner, leaving the Hurricanes at 80/7. Molly Strano was dismissed for a duck, caught by Ellyse Perry off Cheatle’s bowling, as the score remained 80/8.

The lower order could not offer any meaningful resistance. Lauren Smith scored nine off seven deliveries before being caught by Perry off Kerr’s bowling at 107/9 in 17.1 overs. Isabella Malgioglio was the final batter to depart, bowled by Kerr for one off two balls, as Hobart Hurricanes were bowled out for 109 in 17.4 overs. Maddy Green remained unbeaten on 42, but her efforts were not enough to prevent a heavy defeat.

Ashleigh Gardner was the standout performer with the ball as well, finishing with three wickets for 23 runs in three overs. Melie Kerr also claimed three wickets for 25 runs in 2.4 overs, while Camoimhe Bray delivered an economical spell, taking two wickets for just 14 runs in four overs. Lauren Cheatle picked up one wicket for 23 runs, while Sarah Coyte and Frankie Nicklin went wicketless, conceding 17 and seven runs respectively.
