Scotland fast bowler Brad Wheal has announced his retirement from the game of cricket at the age of 30 on Friday (October 16). The Durban-born pacer has decided to end his 10-year career because of the recurring injuries, including a stress fracture of the spine and multiple shoulder surgeries.

Wheal made his debut for Scotland in 2016 when he was just 19 years old. The Hampshire pacer went on to become an important member of Scotland’s bowling attack and represented his country in several ICC tournaments, including four T20 World Cups. Amid this, Aneurin Donald set for BBL debut after white-ball series in Australia.

Brad Wheal reveals heartbreaking reason behind retirement at just 30

Brad Wheal said that he has enjoyed playing for Hampshire and Scotland, but repeated injuries have forced him to retire from the game. The fast bowler revealed that he has suffered four stress fractures in his back and recently undergone knee surgery. He feels his body can no longer handle the pressure of fast bowling, although retiring was not an easy decision for him.

Brad Wheal said in an official statement: “I’ve loved my time at Hampshire and representing Scotland as a professional cricketer, but unfortunately, recurring injuries have forced my hand, and I’ve made the decision to retire from playing cricket. It’s not been an easy decision, but one I am at peace with. I’ve had four stress fractures in my back and recently had surgery on my knee, and ultimately my body can’t cope with the demands of fast bowling anymore.”

Brad Wheal gets emotional after retirement, as he looks back on his Scotland career

Wheal stressed that representing Scotland was a proud moment for him and his family. He added, “It has always meant a lot to me and my family to have had the opportunity to play for Scotland, and it’s something I’ll always be incredibly proud of.

I’ve been fortunate enough to represent Scotland at four World Cups and have had some incredible experiences along the way. I’ve made some lifelong friends and shared a dressing room with some great people, and those are the things I’ll probably miss the most.”

He thanked his teammates, coaches, support staff, and Scotland fans for their support throughout his career. Wheal signed off by saying, “I’m incredibly thankful to all my teammates, coaches, and support staff who I’ve worked with over the years.

I’d also like to thank all the Scotland fans for their support over the years, particularly those who’ve travelled around the world to support us. It’s always meant a lot having them behind us. It’s been a huge part of my career and something I’ll always look back on with really fond memories. I’ll certainly be following the boys closely and supporting them from afar.”

Brad Wheal ends Scotland career with 51 wickets, enjoys success with Hampshire

Brad Wheal made his Scotland debut against Hong Kong in 2016 and went on to play 44 international matches for the country. His international career included 18 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 26 T20 Internationals (T20Is), in which he took a total of 51 wickets.

His express pace, swing, and bounce made him one of the dangerous death-bowlers in the world. The fast bowler featured in the 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2026 editions of the T20 World Cup.

Wheal played an important role in some of Scotland’s memorable victories, including their wins over Bangladesh in 2021 and the West Indies in 2022. Amid this, Big Bash League targets global expansion as Chennai opener draws strong ticket demand.

Wheal also enjoyed a long association with Hampshire, having represented the county since 2015. He played 131 matches for Hampshire across all formats and helped the team win the Royal London One Day Cup in 2018, followed by the Vitality Blast title in 2022.
