Hardik Pandya injury update: From Asian Games selection talks to NZ setback

India all-rounder Hardik Pandya has suffered another injury setback and is set to miss the three India A fixtures against Australia A in Puducherry from October 6. The 32-year-old experienced pain in his right shin earlier this week and has been advised to rest for another 10-15 days by the BCCI medical team.

Pandya has been undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. He last played competitive cricket for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026. With his return delayed again, the all-rounder is now a major doubt for India’s five-match T20I series against New Zealand, which begins on October 22.

Hardik Pandya Ruled Out of India A Series After Shin Injury

Hardik Pandya was expected to make his competitive return for India A after his Return to Play date was set for September 20. However, the recurrence of pain in his right shin has forced him to undergo another round of scans and take further rest, according to the Times of India.

The same issue had previously ruled him out of the T20I series against Afghanistan. He will miss the three 50-over matches against Australia A in Puducherry, which were expected to provide an opportunity to assess his match fitness.

The BCCI has not issued an official statement on the injury. However, Suryansh Shedge is currently training at the Centre of Excellence and could be drafted into the India A squad as his replacement.

Hardik Pandya’s Comeback Disrupted by Multiple Fitness Setbacks

Hardik Pandya’s comeback has repeatedly been interrupted by fitness concerns. He has been based in Bengaluru since the IPL and has continued his rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.

Before the latest setback, Pandya experienced sudden shooting pain around his knee during fielding drills ahead of the Afghanistan T20I series. He took a short break and underwent further assessment, but the pain resurfaced just as he was nearing fitness clearance.

The BCCI had also considered the all-rounder for the 2026 Asian Games, with its operations team reportedly collecting his passport for visa-related formalities. Hardik Pandya Likely to Miss New Zealand Tour

With another 10-15 days of rest required and no immediate match practice available, Hardik Pandya is unlikely to be ready for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand beginning October 22. The selectors are also expected to remain cautious about picking him directly for the ODI series.

If he misses the New Zealand tour, his next potential international opportunity could come during India’s ODI series against Zimbabwe. He could also use the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy or Vijay Hazare Trophy as a route back to competitive cricket, provided he regains full fitness.

The all-rounder has not played competitive cricket since the final stages of IPL 2026. He scored 206 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 138.25 and took four wickets for Mumbai Indians, who finished ninth after winning four of their 14 league matches. He also missed matches towards the end of the season because of back spasms.

Pandya has not played an ODI since India’s four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the 2025 Champions Trophy final. With the 2027 World Cup approaching, India will want him to return only after completing his rehabilitation and regaining full match fitness.
