Former Indian captain and former chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar has backed Ajit Agarkar as his tenure as the current chief of the national selection committee comes to an end. Vengsarkar believes that Ajit Agarkar deserves credit for successes achieved by the Indian team during his time in charge.

Agarkar took over as India’s chief selector in July 2023 and is set to leave the role when his current term ends on October 4. Recent reports suggest that he has informed the BCCI that he does not want to continue, although the board has not formally announced his replacement yet. Earlier, Dilip Vengsarkar backs Mohammed Shami for India return.

Ajit deserves credit for what he has done: Dilip Vengsarkar

Dilip Vengsarkar feels the Indian selectors often do not receive enough recognition for their work. The former chief selector believes that Ajit Agarkar and his selection panel deserve credit for the decisions they made during this successful period.

The legendary cricketer highlighted India’s major trophy wins during Agarkar’s tenure and said that the ongoing chief selector deserves the credit for his job. With Agarkar now set to move on, the BCCI will have to find a new chairman, and Vengsarkar already wished him all the luck and success.

Dilip Vengsarkar was quoted as saying by Revsportz, “He has done a good job and taken some good decisions. So, whoever comes in next, I wish him all the success. We have won two World Cups and the Champions Trophy. So, that’s a good thing. That’s a good performance by the selectors as well. Selectors don’t get that much credit, which I think they should. Ajit deserves credit for what he has done.”

What India achieved during Ajit Agarkar’s tenure?

India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy, and the 2026 T20 World Cup, while also winning the Asia Cup in 2023 and 2025. India also reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final during Agarkar’s tenure as the chief selector.

Additionally,Agarkar’s tenure also saw several young players being pushed into the Indian setup. Young guns like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, and Abhishek Sharma were given opportunities as India worked on building the next generation.

At the same time, the selectors managed the transition involving several senior players, including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Ajinkya Rahane. They maintain a balance between experience and youth. Amid this, Former India selector sends slams Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi over overseas struggles.

Ajit Agarkar’s playing career in numbers

Before becoming the selector, Ajit Agarkar was a key pace-bowling all-rounder for India between 1998 and 2007. He played 191 ODIs and took 288 wickets, along with scoring 1,269 runs.

In Tests, he played 26 matches, took 58 wickets, and scored 571 runs. He also famously hit a Test century at Lord’s in 2002. Agarkar also played four matches and took three wickets. He was also part of India’s squad that won the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup.

Notably, Agarkar’s absence from the crucial BCCI and team meeting was seen as a major sign that he had already decided not to continue as chief selector. Agarkar will officially leave the role after October 4, and the main reason is being Rohit Sharma.
