Former England captain Heather Knight has been named the recipient of the 2026 PCA Outstanding Contribution Award at the PCA Awards in partnership with Toyota. The award recognises the effect she has had on cricket both during matches and away from the field. Knight has been an important figure in the growth of women’s cricket in England and Wales. Her role went beyond her performances, as she also worked in boardrooms and offices to help develop the women’s game. Through that work, she helped improve opportunities and standards for women cricketers.

Knight was among the first England Women players to receive a Central Contract in 2014. In 2017, she played a key part in creating the England Women’s Player Partnership (EWPP), which represents England women’s cricketers. She then served as PCA Vice Chair from 2020 to 2025, giving her a role in domestic, national and international decision-making. Knight also sat on the WCA Player Advisory Group for the global game. The ECB introduced the Knight-Stokes Cup, named after two former England captains, giving state school children the chance to play at Lord’s.

Her record with England shows the scale of her career on the field. Knight played 320 games for England and became the all-time appearance maker for England women. She scored 8,017 international runs across 15 Tests, 160 ODIs and 145 T20Is. Knight announced her international retirement after the historic first England women’s Test at Lord’s against India. She also captained England 199 times and won 134 of those matches. In 2017, she lifted the World Cup trophy at Lord’s after England defeated India by nine runs, creating one of the biggest moments of her career.

Knight’s work and achievements earned further recognition in 2018, when she received the OBE for services to cricket. She was also named one of the Five Wisden Cricketers of the Year. At the PCA Awards in partnership with Toyota, her career was celebrated through an acceptance speech shown alongside a video featuring teammates and important figures. After receiving the honour, Knight said, “I’m so thankful for the award, I want to say a big thank you for the recognition, I’ve been very lucky to do what I’ve done for so long.” She also thanked the PCA and those who had worked with her during her career.

Knight also remembered the people who helped take women’s cricket forward during her time as captain. She said, “To Emma Reid, Rob Lynch and Daryl Mitchell you were so instrumental in helping push the women’s game forward and helping drive standards and I’m really proud of the progress that we made.” Emma Reid, PCA Director of Player Rights and Women’s Cricket, also praised Knight’s work. Reid said, “Heather is so passionate about women’s cricket, once she became captain she was dedicated to improving the game as a whole.” She added that Knight had been pivotal to growing women’s cricket around the world and deserved the honour.

The PCA Outstanding Contribution Award is presented to past or present PCA members who have made a significant contribution to cricket and uplifted the cricketing world and society through their impact. Knight is the fifth recipient of the award. The previous winners are Graham Gooch (2025), Matthew Maynard (2024), Tom Smith (2023) and Andy Brassington (2022). Her career included 320 international appearances, 8,017 runs and 199 captaincy assignments, while her work away from matches helped represent players and support women’s cricket in England and Wales. The honour now recognises that wider contribution to the game through many important stages of her long career.
