India Women Set a New Record: 17 T20I Wins and Counting in 2026

The Indian women’s team has scripted a remarkable landmark year in 2026 in Women’s T20Is, registering their 17th win of the calendar year with a commanding nine-wicket victory over Josephine Nkomo’s Zimbabwe in the second T20I in Raipur on 18th October.

The win not only sealed the three-match series 2-0 with a game to spare but also took India past their previous best of 16 T20I victories in a calendar year, set back in 2018. Only Thailand and Uganda, with 23 wins each in 2025, have recorded more victories in a single year in the format, underlining the scale of India’s relentless run in 2026 so far.

The triumph also extended India’s ongoing winning streak to 10 matches, their longest in Women’s T20I history. That unbeaten run began at the sixth edition of the ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2026 on 30th August, when India defeated Thipatcha Putthawong’s Thailand by 94 runs in the tournament’s third game. Since then, the women in blue have not tasted turning a transitional phase into one of the most dominant stretches ever seen for the country in the women’s shortest format.

India’s first T20I win of 2026 came on 15th February against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground, in the opening game of a demanding all-format tour. Rain interruption saw India ahead of the DLS par score, sealing a 21-run win. India went on to take the T20I series 2-1, though they lost the ODI series 3-0 and the one-off four-day Test by 10 wickets. That tour also marked the international farewell of former Australian skipper and wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy, adding historical weight to India’s early-season breakthrough.

The record-breaking campaign has unfolded amid a significant leadership transition. Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down as India’s all-format captain on the morning of 6th October, announcing her decision through her personal Instagram handle. Later that evening, Smriti Mandhana was confirmed as India’s new all-format skipper, taking charge just ahead of the historic maiden white-ball bilateral series against Zimbabwe on home soil. Shafali Verma was appointed vice-captain in T20Is, while Deepti Sharma took on the ODI vice-captaincy. India won the first T20I by four wickets before delivering an even more emphatic statement in the second, and the third match will be played at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on 20th October from 7 PM IST.

Shafali Verma has been the engine of India’s batting surge, emerging as the leading run-scorer in Women’s T20Is in 2026. The new T20I vice-captain has amassed an all-time high of 922 runs at a strike rate of 165.52 and an average of 38.41 in 26 innings, including eight half-centuries and a maiden T20I century against Bangladesh at the Asian Games in Japan in September. Her all-round value is equally striking: 12 wickets at 22.83 with an economy of 6.04 in 18 innings with her off-spin. Mandhana herself sits third on both the all-time and 2026 lists for most runs in a calendar year, with 821 runs at a strike rate of 150.09 and an average of 39.09 in 23 innings, featuring five fifties and a century in 24 matches.

With the ball, 22-year-old left-arm spinner Shree Charani, currently the world’s number one T20I bowler with an all-time record 817 rating points, surpassing Australia’s Megan Schutt’s 806, leads India’s attack with 49 wickets (the most by an Indian bowler in a year in the format) at 10.71 and an economy of 5.56 in 25 innings, including three four-wicket hauls. Deepti Sharma has complemented her with 38 wickets at 15.31 and an economy of 6.6 in 26 innings, including two five-wicket hauls.

With a tour of South Africa from 9th to 30th December, the inaugural Women’s T20 Champions Trophy at home from 14th to 28th February 2027, the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 and the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2028 ahead, India, now led by skipper Smriti Mandhana, have turned a record year into a launchpad. Seventeen wins and a 10-match streak later, the message is unmistakable: the new era has begun well, with a remarkable legacy to live up to in the near future.
