South Australia enter the 2026-27 Women’s National Cricket League season determined to turn promise into progress. Led by captain Jemma Barsby, the side has retained its entire list after finishing fourth with 31 points from 12 games in 2025-26, recording seven victories, four defeats and one washout. Their late surge, six wins from their final eight matches, fuelled hopes of a return to the decider, but also underlined the need to control their own path this time.

South Australia’s strong finish left them just outside the top two, meaning their finals hopes depended partly on results elsewhere. That is a scenario the team is eager to avoid. Under coach Mick Delaney, who took charge in 2024, the side has developed an aggressive identity built around taking the game on. The next challenge is to apply that approach with greater consistency across the entire campaign.

The unchanged squad represents a significant show of faith in a group that has steadily evolved. Former Australia opener Nicole Bolton, who has served as a South Australia assistant since 2023, will oversee the opening two matches while Delaney tours India with Australia A. Bolton will have the benefit of Tahlia McGrath and Megan Schutt for South Australia’s back-to-back day-night fixtures against Victoria at Junction Oval.

“The last two years, we’ve gotten so close to making a final, and unfortunately, we had to have results go our way to get in,” Bolton told cricket.com.au. “We don’t want to be in that position again.”

Bolton believes continuity can help South Australia build on last season’s momentum. With players familiar with their responsibilities, the side can focus less on defining roles and more on executing them under pressure. “Everyone’s really clear on where they see their role, where they see their improvements and what they offer the team,” she said.

That clarity will be central to South Australia’s pursuit of a deeper finals run. Their attacking style remains a defining feature, but the team has spent the pre-season learning when to be aggressive and when to adapt to conditions, opposition and match situations. The objective is not simply to play positively, but to make that approach sustainable over 50 overs.

South Australia’s preparation included a connection camp in Cairns before a series of matches in Maroochydore. Bolton said the pre-season fixtures were treated as an extension of the team’s preparation rather than a referendum on results, allowing the squad to concentrate on communication, systems and game style.

With the bat, South Australia want to preserve their adaptability while avoiding clusters of wickets. A deeper, more stable innings could give their varied bowling attack the platform it needs to control matches. “From a bowling perspective, we want to be really disciplined, we want to build pressure, and we want to take wickets,” Bolton said.

Amanda-Jade Wellington, Schutt, Darcie Brown and the emerging options around them give South Australia a diverse attack capable of changing the rhythm of a contest. The fielding unit, meanwhile, has become anothere of direction supporting their ambition to be the competition’s best fielding side

The early availability of McGrath and Schutt is a major boost, while Brown could feature in the second match after her Australia A commitments. Courtney Webb will miss both opening games because of the India tour. Her absence, along with the uncertain availability of contracted players later in the season, will test the squad’s depth as international commitments, the Women’s Premier League and Australia’s packed schedule take effect.

The return of Hollie Armitage from the United Kingdom further strengthens the group, offering experience, leadership and batting quality. South Australia also retain the services of Barsby, whose all-round contribution and leadership will be vital as the side seeks to convert close finishes into decisive results. “We don’t want to rely on results to get us to the big dance,” Bolton said.

That mindset captures South Australia’s campaign. They have the continuity, talent and late-season evidence to believe they belong in the finals conversation. The task now is to produce that level of cricket earlier, sustain their attacking principles and ensure their own performance, not outside results, determines whether they reach the decider.
