Agarkar-BCCI Rift: Rohit Sharma, VVS Laxman Differences Behind Selector’s Exit?
What initially appeared to be a routine change at the top of India’s selection setup reportedly had much deeper roots. The growing disagreement over Rohit Sharma’s future, differences with VVS Laxman and the Centre of Excellence (COE) – all drifted the former India pacer away from the trust of BCCI officials.
Agarkar’s departure comes despite the selection panel overseeing a highly successful white-ball run. Under his chairmanship, India’s squads reached four ICC white-ball tournament finals in three years and won three trophies – two T20 World Cups and the 2025 Champions Trophy.
However, the relationship between Agarkar and the current BCCI establishment reportedly became increasingly strained.
Rohit Sharma’s Future Became a Major Flashpoint
Ahead of India’s white-ball series against England, the selection committee, team management and key BCCI decision-makers reportedly agreed that India would move on from Rohit after the Lord’s ODI.
South Zone selector Pragyan Ojha was subsequently asked to communicate the decision to Rohit. The veteran opener, who remains keen on playing the 2027 ODI World Cup, was reportedly unhappy with the manner in which the decision was conveyed and subsequently raised his concerns with a senior BCCI administrator.
The situation became more complicated when the BCCI publicly backed Rohit and dismissed speculation surrounding his retirement following the Lord’s ODI.
“That was perhaps the day when Ajit knew that it would be very difficult for him to continue. In fact, he had no inkling that a media statement was issued by the BCCI. He understood that going forward, the call on big names won’t be his prerogative,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by PTI.
The disagreement was reportedly rooted partly in differing views over India’s long-term ODI planning. Agarkar believed that if Yashasvi Jaiswal was to be part of India’s 2027 World Cup plans, the youngster would need sufficient opportunities – potentially around 20 ODIs – to establish himself.
Differences With VVS Laxman Also Grew
The relationship between Agarkar and VVS Laxman, the head of the Centre of Excellence, also reportedly became increasingly complicated.
The two former India teammates are understood to have disagreed over the management of injured players and the scheduling of India A fixtures.
Agarkar had also reportedly questioned the need for India’s first-choice players to feature in the Asian Games, considering cricket’s position as a secondary sport at the multi-sport event. India instead sent a second-string team to Hangzhou in 2023, with Ruturaj Gaikwad leading the side.
The scheduling of India A matches became anotherber 22 to October 2 overlap with the Irani Cup in Srinagar, while the three India A matches against New Zealand A between October 24 and November 10 overlap with India’s white-ball commitments
Review Meeting Absence Added To Tensions
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia defended Agarkar’s absence, but there was reportedly a section within the board that believed the chairman of selectors should have attended such an important meeting.
An injury list involving several prominent players subsequently appearing in the media added another layer of mistrust. By then, Agarkar’s exit had become a matter of time. And a fortnight later, his tenure ends.
