Tasmania enters the 2026-27 Women’s National Cricket League season determined to rebuild after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, when they finished sixth on the points table with 15 points from 12 matches, including three victories and nine defeats. With Elyse Villani preparing to welcome her first child, experienced leg-spinner Maisy Gibson has taken over as captain, while a strengthened all-round unit gives the Tigers renewed hope of returning to the competition’s upper tier.
Tasmania’s recent decline has been stark. After winning three consecutive WNCL titles, the Tigers narrowly missed the finals in 2024-25 before slipping to second-bottom last season. Their challenge now is not merely to improve their position, but to rediscover the resilience and consistency that defined their title-winning years.
Coach Jude Coleman believes the response under pressure will determine whether Tasmania can make that climb. “We had glimpses of really good cricket with bat and ball, but we just haven’t been able to put it together on the day,” Coleman told Cricket Australia. The Tigers have used the preseason to address that shortcoming, focusing on decision-making, clarity and maintaining an attacking mindset when matches become difficult. “No matter the result, what I’m wanting to see from the players is they really commit to that positive style of cricket no matter what the situation,” Coleman said.
Gibson inherits a significant leadership role from Villani, who has been an influential figure in Tasmania’s rise and will miss the upcoming season due to the birth of her first child. The 30-year-old has been part of the Tigers’ setup since moving from New South Wales in 2019 and has overcome multiple serious knee injuries during her career.
After taking a break from professional cricket, Gibson returned to Tasmania in 2024 and immediately claimed the Veronica Pyke Medal as the Tigers’ female player of the year. Her experience, character and knowledge of the group make her a natural successor, although Coleman has encouraged the new captain to establish her own identity.
“It’s definitely big shoes to fill,” Coleman said. “But one of the things we’ve spoken about with Maisy a lot is to make sure she’ll just be herself and not try and live up to Junior’s legacy.” Gibson will be supported by a leadership group featuring Rachel Trenaman and Hayley Silver-Holmes, while Villani remains available to offer guidance from outside the playing group.
Tasmania’s most notable domestic recruit is Ella Hayward, who has joined from Victoria. The 22-year-old first made her mark as an off-spinner before developing into a dependable top-order batter and a more complete all-rounder. After being named Victoria’s best player in 2024-25, Hayward was also appointed co-vice-captain for the following season.
Her arrival strengthens a spin attack that has lost Amy Smith, while giving Tasmania greater flexibility with the bat. Coleman expects Hayward to contribute throughout matches, rather than being restricted to a single phase. “She’s just got that all-round game,” he said. “What really stood out for me was that ability to grind with the bat, and then consistency with the ball.”
England all-rounder Alice Davidson-Richards replaces Scotland captain Kathryn Bryce as Tasmania’s overseas player. The experienced pace-bowling all-rounder has represented England in 19 matches across formats and offers control with the ball and composure in the middle order. “She’s going to give us that all-round option, reliability of hitting the stumps with the ball, and then a bit of experience in the middle-order with the bat,” Coleman said.
Wicketkeeper-batter Kate Pelle has moved from New South Wales, while Caity Mair has earned a full contract after making an impression in Premier Cricket, Tasmania’s Second XI and one senior appearance last season. Teenager Mia Barwick, who debuted in the WNCL at only 15, has retained her rookie status alongside Ava Curtis.
Nicola Carey is the only Cricket Australia-contracted player on Tasmania’s list and is expected to be available for the opening two matches <a href="https://cricket.international/rohit-sharmas-top-5-iconic-odi-knocks-against-west-indies/" title="Rohit Sharma’s Top 5 iconic ODI knocks against West Indies”>against Western Australia. Her availability could become limited later in the season because of Australia’s international commitments, the Women’s Premier League and the T20 Champions Trophy.
Tasmania’s squad also includes Lizelle Lee, Naomi Stalenberg, Courtney Sippel, Lauren Smith, Sara Kennedy, Tabatha Saville, Callie Wilson and Rachel Trenaman. Trenaman and Silver-Holmes are expected to miss the opening phase while touring India with Australia A. The preseason has presented its own challenges, with cold conditions and limited centre-wicket access because football occupies many local ovals. Tasmania travelled to the Sunshine Coast for valuable middle practice, but Coleman knows preparation alone will not guarantee a turnaround.
The Tigers’ 2026-27 campaign will ultimately be judged by how they respond when momentum shifts. With Gibson’s leadership, Hayward’s versatility, Davidson-Richards’ experience and a deeper squad around them, Tasmania possess the ingredients for a revival. Their task is to turn those ingredients into pressure-resistant cricket and ensure last season’s sixth-place finish becomes a low point rather than a new standard.
