A fresh video of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is going viral online. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on the stage to congratulate all of the athletes who won gold in the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, Sooryavanshi’s expressions caught the camera.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was listening to PM Narendra Modi’s speech in New Delhi when his teammate, Arshdeep Singh, poked him from behind. The Prime Minister was addressing the young talents of the contingent when Arshdeep poked Sooryavanshi, who is only 15.

Sooryavanshi, who made his debut at the age of only 15, breaking legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record as the youngest ever to represent the Indian men’s national cricket team, won a gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games. When he claimed the gold in Japan, the Bihar prodigy was 15 years, six months and six days old.

India won the men’s cricket event final by defeating their arch rival Pakistan. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi played a crucial role in the medal glory, scoring 15 off nine balls. India eventually outclassed Pakistan by 19 runs.

Narendra Modi mentioned that in the recently concluded Asian Games, there were many talents who were between the ages of 15 and 17, represented India, made the nation proud, and won the hearts of countless Indian sports fans. The Prime Minister further mentioned that age is not a barrier to gaining success in sports.

“This time in the Asian Games, there were many players on Team India whose age was only 15 to 17 years,” PM Modi said at the event.

“At such a young age, these players have enhanced the pride of the country with their spectacular performances. They have won the hearts of the countrymen. This shows that for success, age is not a restriction. In sports, it is the start made at a young age that becomes an added advantage.”

Overall 85 medals for India from the 2026 Asian Games

Overall, India bagged 85 medals in total in Japan, including 21 gold medals, while debutants contributed 41 medals. Women athletes accounted for 38 medals, including 11 gold. Before the speech, the PM met with all the athletes who won medals at the Asian Games 2026 and congratulated them.

He acknowledged the performances of the men’s and women’s cricket teams, the hockey teams and the archers, highlighting the women’s hockey team. Winning a gold medal in the women’s hockey event was a massive achievement in Indian sports, as it ended a 44-year wait.

Asian Games gold-winning cricket teams, ICC chairman Jay Shah, Indian Olympic Association president P T Usha, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, and officials of various sports sectors attended the meeting.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is currently with the Indian cricket team for the ongoing 5-T20I series against West Indies. However, Sooryavanshi was on the bench for all four of the first matches of the series. The series is currently at 2-2, with one more match to be played.
