Virender Sehwag backs Aaryavir, Anvay and Arjun Tendulkar amid father-son comparisons

India produced some of the greatest cricketers from the early 1990s to the 2000s. During these times, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Virender Sehwag were some of the greatest batters. Now Sachin’s son, Arjun Tendulkar, has been playing the game for a decade. Dravid’s son, Anvay, and Sehwag’s son, Aaryavir, are now teammates for India U19, and the comparison has started.

The sons are inevitably compared to their legendary fathers, as their fathers were amazing for the country, and they cannot deny the pressure from outside that they cannot escape. While speaking in an exclusive interview with NDTV, the former India opener stated that comparisons have been there and will be there, as previously; when they have done well while playing the game, now their sons are playing, people will compare. But he feels that it is not the right thing to compare with their fathers, as they can be compared with others but not with their fathers.

“The comparisons will be there. We played cricket and we did so well, and now our kids are playing cricket, so they will compare. But it’s not the right thing to compare with the fathers. You can compare them with other players, but why are you comparing them with their fathers? It’s not right,” Sehwag stated.

Aaryavir recently featured in India’s U19 one-day series against Australia U19, scoring 109 runs across three games. On the other hand, Anvay Dravid scored 47 runs from two innings, and in the first game he played a fiery knock of 36 runs off 18 balls.

Speaking about his son, senior Sehwag said that the respective sons will be upset whenever there is a comparison, as Aaryavir is just an 18-year-old and he has just started his career, so it is not right.

“They will also get upset, you know, when the media or when people will compare. He (Aaryavir) is 18. I did so much for myself and for my team, and he’s just started. So I think it’s not fair,” he added.

Similarly, backing Arjun Tendulkar as well, he feels that people start comparing Arjun with Sachin, which is not fair, as junior Tendulkar will make his own name with his performances. He has done well in the Ranji Trophy, so Sehwag does not understand why he will follow in his father’s footsteps; let them play and do something, then start comparing with others.

Virender Sehwag said, “People are comparing Sachin Tendulkar’s son with Sachin. That’s not fair. He’s a fast-bowling all-rounder who did well, scored a hundred and took five wickets, all in the Ranji Trophy. But I don’t know why people are comparing him with Sachin. He will make his own name and play the way he wants to play. He will not follow in his father’s footsteps,” Sehwag explained.

“Let them play first. Let them do something and then you will start comparing with others,” he further said.
