The Adelaide Strikers enter the 12th edition of the Women’s Big Bash League, running from 29th October to 5th December 2026, with a familiar blend of championship pedigree, elite spin bowling and unresolved questions around batting depth and pace re

Led by Tahlia McGrath, the two-time champions finished sixth in WBBL 11 with nine points from 10 games, three wins, four defeats and three washed-out fixtures, missing the finals by just one run. With Laura Wolvaardt retained, Sophie Ecclestone returning and an exciting young bowling group emerging, the Strikers have the ingredients for a strong response, though the loss of Darcie Brown and Megan Schutt’s opening-game suspension complicate their build-up.

Adelaide Strikers SWOT Analysis

Pre-Season Build-up

The Strikers’ pre-season has been defined by continuity in key areas and significant change elsewhere. They retained Darcie Brown and Amanda-Jade Wellington before the movement window opened, re-signed Maddie Penna and secured Laura Wolvaardt’s services, while Sophie Ecclestone returns for a second season in blue. Their most notable batting addition is England’s Maia Bouchier, poached from the Melbourne Stars to replace her compatriot and WBBL 11 opening partner Tammy Beaumont.

Former Melbourne Renegades batter Emma de Broughe has also joined the squad, adding another domestic option at the top of the order. However, the departure of Jemma Barsby to the Sydney Thunder and Brown’s tournament-ending back issue have left Adelaide with gaps to manage. The club is yet to announce a replacement for Brown, leaving their pace attack particularly exposed heading into the season.

Strengths: One of the most potent spin attacks

Adelaide’s greatest strength remains one of the most potent spin attacks in the competition. Amanda-Jade Wellington, the third-highest wicket-taker in WBBL history and the Strikers’ leading wicket-taker, has claimed 165 wickets at an average of 20.03 and an economy of 6.77 in 149 innings, including two five-wicket hauls and a four-wicket haul in 152 matches. Her best tournament returns came across WBBL 07, WBBL 08 and WBBL 09, when she took 23 wickets in each season for a combined 69 wickets in 47 innings, playing a central role in Adelaide’s back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023.

Sophie Ecclestone adds world-class variety and control alongside her. The world No. 3-ranked T20I bowler has taken 37 WBBL wickets at an average of 21.70 and an economy of 6.98 in 31 innings, including a four-wicket haul in 32 matches. With leg-spinners Anesu Mushangwe, Maddie Penna and Ellie Johnston also available, the Strikers can suffocate opponents through the middle overs and possess multiple wicket-taking options across different phases.

Areas of Concern: Lack of Depth in the Batting department

Batting depth is Adelaide’s most pressing concern. Emma de Broughe, Maia Bouchier, Laura Wolvaardt and wicketkeeper-batter Bridget Patterson are the only pure batters in the squad, with Tahlia McGrath, Ellie Johnston, Eleanor Larosa and Sophie Ecclestone shouldering the all-rounder responsibilities. Wolvaardt was the Strikers’ leading run-scorer in WBBL 11 with 264 runs at an average of 44 and a strike rate of 122.22 in eight innings, including two half-centuries, but the side will need more consistent support around her.

The absence of a replacement for Darcie Brown further magnifies the issue. If the top order fails to fire or an injury strikes the middle order, Adelaide could lack the cushion of reliable lower-order batting. Their campaign may depend heavily on McGrath’s ability to anchor and accelerate, while the newer batting additions settle quickly.

Opportunities: Maggie Clark and Eleanor Larosa to watch out

Maggie Clark and Eleanor Larosa represent Adelaide’s most exciting opportunities. Clark, a 19-year-old pace bowler, took four wickets in four innings in the recent T20 Spring Challenge and could make her WBBL debut this season. She previously finished as the leading wicket-taker at the inaugural ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2023, with 12 wickets at an average of 6.25 and an economy of 4.20 in five matches.

Larosa, meanwhile, offers genuine dual-threat potential. The 20-year-old left-arm pacer has already taken eight WBBL wickets at an average of 14 and an economy of 7.63 in four innings, including a four-wicket haul in five matches. At the 2025 ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup in Malaysia, she claimed seven wickets at an average of 8.57 and an economy of 4.00, while also scoring 57 runs at an average of 14.25. If either player translates their promise into senior-level impact, Adelaide’s bowling unit could become considerably deeper.

Threat: Lack of Experience in the Pace Attack

The lack of experience in the pace attack is a serious threat. With Darcie Brown ruled out, Tahlia McGrath and Megan Schutt are the only experienced fast-bowling options in the squad. Schutt, the Strikers’ second-highest wicket-taker with 150 wickets at an average of 21.14 and an economy of 6.03 in 141 innings, will also miss the opening fixture against the Melbourne Stars due to a two-match suspension imposed by Cricket Australia for a prescription-medication guideline breach.

That leaves Tahlia McGrath, who has taken 94 WBBL wickets at an average of 25.70 and an economy of 7.15 in 126 innings, to carry early-season responsibility with the ball. Her leadership and all-round quality, 2,447 runs at a strike rate of 106.71 and an average of 21.65 in 140 innings, remain vital, but Adelaide cannot afford prolonged absences or poor form from their senior pacers. If the young quicks do not step up and the batting lacks depth, the Strikers’ title ambitions could be tested well before the business end of WBBL 12.
