The Brisbane Heat enter the 12th edition of the Women’s Big Bash League, running from 29th October to 5th December 2026, carrying the heaviest burden in the competition’s history: the unwanted distinction of becoming the first team to complete a WBBL season without a victory.

After finishing bottom of the WBBL 11 table with a solitary point from a washout and nine defeats in 10 games, the two-time champions begin their redemption campaign against the Sydney Sixers at Allan Border Field on Friday night. With former skipper Jess Jonassen ruled out through a hip injury, the Heat will rely heavily on a young, exciting pace attack, the experience of Georgia Redmayne and the arrival of Sarah Glenn and Orla Prendergast to restore their status as genuine contenders.

Brisbane Heat squad for WBBL 12:

Lily Bassingthwaighte, Bonnie Berry, Lucinda Bourke, Sianna Ginger, Sarah Glenn, Lucy Hamilton, Grace Harris, Charli Knott, Annie O’Neil, Grace Parsons, Orla Prendergast, Georgia Redmayne, Catherine White, Mikayla Wringley

Brisbane Heat SWOT Analysis

Pre-Season Build-up

Brisbane’s build-up has been shaped by both renewal and adversity. Jonassen stepped down as captain on 9th March 2026, citing the mental-health and physical toll of leadership, and has now been ruled out of WBBL 12 after the medical team advised her to prioritise recovery, with a return targeted for the new year. The Heat are negotiating with an international player to fill her squad spot, with an announcement expected before their tournament opener.

There are positives, though. Georgia Redmayne has returned, while WBBL 11 Young Gun award winner and recent Australia debutant Lucy Hamilton has been secured. The franchise has also retained young talents Bonnie Berry, Annie O’Neil and Grace Parsons. Overseas, England leg-spinner Sarah Glenn has signed for the full campaign after taking 4 for 18 against the Sydney Thunder as a replacement player last season, while Irish all-rounder Orla Prendergast adds further balance after her previous stint with the Adelaide Strikers.

Strengths: Lethal Pace Attack

The Heat’s most compelling strength is a young but potentially lethal pace attack. Lucy Hamilton, the 20-year-old left-arm pace-bowling all-rounder, will again shoulder major responsibility after taking 20 wickets at an average of 22.25 and an economy of 6.84 in 20 innings, including a five-wicket haul, across 21 WBBL matches. Her international exposure and growing confidence make her central to Brisbane’s hopes.

Orla Prendergast brings energy, skill and versatility. The 24-year-old Irish all-rounder scored 110 runs at a strike rate of 123.59 and an average of 15.71 in seven innings for the Strikers in 2024-25, while also claiming six wickets at an average of 35.33 and an economy of 9.21 in eight innings. Likely to bat in the top order, she could be a genuine game-changer with both bat and ball.

Sianna Ginger and Lily Bassingthwaighte deepen the young bowling group. Ginger took five wickets in three innings in the T20 Spring Challenge, including a four-wicket haul, and made 42 runs, while 19-year-old Bassingthwaighte impressed at the 2025 ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup with six wickets at an average of 3.33 and an economy of 2.22 in three innings.

Areas of Concern: Inexperienced middle-order

Brisbane’s biggest concern is an inexperienced middle order. Annie O’Neil, at 27, is likely to be their most experienced middle-order option, yet she has only 107 WBBL runs at a strike rate of 142.66 and an average of 10.70 in 11 innings, with a best of 33. Her promising Spring Challenge scores of 13, 17 and 32 offer encouragement, but she must now translate that form into consistent Big Bash contributions.

Wicketkeeper-batter Mikayla Wringley is another likely middle-order candidate, but her numbers remain modest: 62 runs at a strike rate of 101.63 and an average of 15.50 in six innings. With Jonassen absent and two squad slots still unfilled, the Heat’s batting depth and ability to handle pressure situations remain major question marks.

Opportunities: Charli Knott needs to step up as an all-rounder

Charli Knott has a major opportunity to step up in Jonassen’s absence. The 23-year-old off-spinning all-rounder has 775 runs at a strike rate of 118.68 and an average of 18.45 in 57 innings, along with 28 wickets at an average of 32.71 and an economy of 7.84 in 54 innings. Her recent Spring Challenge returns of 24, 31 and 13 with the bat, plus two wickets, suggest she is building rhythm.

A strong WBBL 12 could push Knott into national selection conversations. More immediately, her all-round development could provide the balance Brisbane desperately needs, particularly if she converts promising starts into match-defining performances with both bat and ball.

Threats: The Absence of a Proven Finisher

The absence of a proven finisher is Brisbane’s clearest threat. The Heat need someone capable of accelerating sharply in the final five or six overs, and Lucy Hamilton may be their best candidate after her explosive 36 off 19 balls at a strike rate of 189.47 for the Delhi Capitals against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in WPL 2026, an innings featuring three fours and three sixes.

However, relying on a 20-year-old to solve a specialist finishing role is risky. Unless the two remaining signings (including Jess Jonassen’s replacement) add batting power or an emerging batter seizes the opportunity, Brisbane’s otherwise promising campaign could again be undermined by an inability to close out innings under pressure.
