There is a distinct air of fresh starts heading into this Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 12 opener at Junction Oval, with both franchises desperate to erase the frustrations of missing out on finals cricket last summer.
Under the captaincy of Sophie Molineux, the Melbourne Renegades enter the new campaign boasting plenty of firepower, headlined by the return of West Indian star Hayley Matthews alongside Deandra Dottin’s boundary-clearing muscle.
On the other side, Sydney Thunder looks leaner and meaner under Phoebe Litchfield. With Heather Knight bringing her veteran composure back into the middle order and the fresh international pace of England’s Lauren Bell in their ranks, the Thunder have deliberately targeted and reinforced the exact areas that let them down in clutch moments last season.
Controlling the powerplay on a true Junction Oval deck will set the tone early, making key matchups crucial from ball one. If Matthews and Molineux build a solid launchpad, it frees up Melbourne’s aggressive middle order to take calculated risks through the middle overs against Sydney’s refreshed seam attack.
While the Renegades hold the upper hand in recent head-to-head encounters—largely thanks to spin options like Georgia Wareham controlling the run rate—the Thunder’s new squad dynamics make them a dangerous, unpredictable side. Expect a tightly contested affair where the outcome likely hinges on a single death-overs spell or quickfire cameo, with whoever grabs early momentum setting a massive marker for the rest of their season.
Squads:
Melbourne Renegades Women’s Cricket Team
Sophie Molineux (C), Deandra Dottin*, Nicole Faltum, Tess Flintoff, Milly Illingworth, Sara Kennedy, Hayley Matthews*, Sophie Molineux, OliWareham, Courtney Webb, Annie Wikman
Sydney Thunder Women’s Cricket Team
Phoebe Litchfield (C), Jemma Barsby, Sam Bates, Lauren Bell*, Hannah Darlington, Nadine de Klerk*, Lucy Finn, Hasrat Gill, Nicola Hancock, Laura Harris, Heather Knight*, Anika Learoyd, Georgia Voll, Tahlia Wilson
Head-to-Head:
- Played – 21
- Melbourne Renegades Won – 10
- Sydney Thunder Won – 11
Historically, there is almost nothing separating these two sides, with Sydney Thunder holding the slimmest of edges at 11 wins to the Renegades’ 10 across 21 encounters. It has been a rivalry marked by momentum swings, where individual brilliance often dictates the outcome rather than any prolonged period of dominance by either franchise. That razor-thin margin only adds to the intrigue of this opening fixture, as the Renegades look to pull even on home soil while Thunder aim to preserve their slight head-to-head advantage.
