Rohit Sharma has been the talk of the cricketing fraternity over his future and his participation in the ODI World Cup 2027. Despite his uncertain future, he has been selected for the upcoming ODI series against the <a href="https://cricket.international/chinelle-henry-returns-as-west-indies-women-name-15-player-squad-for-zimbabwe-series/" title="Chinelle Henry Returns as West Indies Women Name 15-Player Squad for Zimbabwe Series”>West Indies. Ahead of the series, former India Women’s National Cricket Team captain Anjum Chopra believes that Rohit should be left alone.

India National Cricket Team is lined up to play three ODIs against the Windies starting from 27th September. Rohit Sharma, who had a decent series against England, will yet again look for runs in the series to retain his place as opener at least for the next series against New Zealand, which is away from home.

“Decision belongs to the player”: Anjum Chopra on Rohit Sharma’s retirement

In an interview with NDTV, Anjum Chopra stated that every retirement decision depends on the player. All cricketers are well aware of their situation regarding whether to continue or to end their career. She also mentioned that cricketers like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should continue to play as long as possible because of their talent.

“Ultimately, that decision belongs to the player. Every cricketer knows their own situation, whether they still have the desire, the freshness and the enthusiasm to continue,” Chopra said in an interview with NDTV.

“Personally, I have always felt that players like MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should just keep playing because they are such talented cricketers who make the game look beautiful with their presence and stroke play.”

“But it should always be driven by the player”: Anjum Chopra on retirement decision of players

She also emphasized that not every player can play forever; however, she believes the decision to step away should be the player’s. Rohit has retired from Tests and T20Is but continues to play ODIs. Anjum Chopra states that retirement should be each player’s choice, and outside pressure should not be an option.

“Of course, nobody can play forever and every player eventually has to make a decision,” Chopra added. “But it should always be driven by the player. Once they are convinced that the time is right, everything else will fall into place.”

Rohit Sharma’s recent form

Rohit was brilliant in Australia and won the Player of the Series, with 202 runs at an average of 101.00. Then in the series against South Africa, he performed decently, scoring a high of 75 runs. Following that, against New Zealand, he had a quiet series as he failed to score runs, with his average falling below 20 in that series.

Later on in England, a vintage Rohit Sharma show was enjoyed by the fans; despite getting starts in the first two games, he failed to convert. But in the third and final ODI, he played a gem of a knock of 138 runs off 110 deliveries, and dismissed the rumours of his retirement at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, London.

The upcoming series will be a crucial one for the former India skipper, keeping in mind the outside pressure. Despite working hard on his fitness, the opener needs to score runs in the series against the Caribbean side.
