Glamorgan have secured the services of promising England wicket-keeper batter Seren Smale on a three-year contract that will run until the end of the 2029 season. The 21-year-old Welsh-born cricketer will join the club from Lancashire ahead of the 2027 campaign, returning to the region where her cricketing journey began and strengthening Glamorgan’s ambitions in the women’s game.
Seren Smale’s move comes during the ongoing 2026 Asian Games, being hosted by Japan at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin from September 17 to 22, 2026. For Glamorgan, the signing represents an important statement of intent, while for Smale, it marks an emotional homecoming and a significant new chapter in her career.
The wicket-keeper batter has enjoyed a productive campaign with Lancashire in the ongoing ECB Women’s One Day Cup. Representing the side under the leadership of wicket-keeper batter and captain Eleanor Threlkeld, Smale finished as Lancashire’s second-highest run-scorer, accumulating 434 runs at a strike rate of 83.46 and an average of 33.38 across 15 innings. She also registered two half-centuries in 15 matches.
Lancashire ended their campaign fourth in the points table with 35 points from 16 games, recording eight victories and eight defeats. Smale’s consistency with the bat, combined with her ability behind the stumps, underlined why she has emerged as one of the most exciting young talents in English cricket. Her domestic experience extends beyond Lancashire.
Smale featured for the Thunder between 2021 and 2024 and has also represented Birmingham Phoenix, Southern Brave, Manchester Originals and London Spirit in The Hundred. Across 17 matches and 13 innings in the competition, she has scored 168 runs at a strike rate of 85.71 and an average of 18.66.

She has scored 35 runs at a strike rate of 120.68 and an average of 17.50 in two innings and two matches for England in the format so far. Earlier, she represented England at the inaugural ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2023, finishing as the team’s fourth-highest run-scorer with 121 runs at a strike rate of 124.74 and an average of 30.25 across six innings and six matches.
Born in Wrexham, Smale began playing cricket at Buckley Cricket Club in North Wales before progressing through the Cricket Wales pathway. Her clean ball-striking, sharp glove work and composure under pressure have since become defining features of her game. “Being Welsh and being able to represent Glamorgan professionally brings me so much excitement,” Smale said. “It’s where I started my cricket journey, and I can’t wait to see what this next chapter brings.”
Glamorgan Head of Women & Girls Cricket Aimee Rees said the club had identified Smale as a key recruitment target early in its planning. “She is incredibly proud to be Welsh,” Rees said. “Seren’s cricketing journey began through the Cricket Wales pathway, so it’s fantastic to see that journey come full circle with her joining Glamorgan.” Rees added that Smale’s Hundred and international experience would bring “real quality” to the squad and expressed confidence that she would make a major impact while continuing to develop on the biggest stages.
Smale will link up with the Glamorgan squad for pre-season preparations later this year, with her arrival providing the club with an accomplished young wicket-keeper batter capable of contributing across formats.
