Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has slammed the BCCI Centre of Excellence, targeting the head, VVS Laxman, for recent injuries after the fresh Varun Chakravarthy setback.
Ashwin has called for a major change in how India manages its players across the three formats of the game. He feels India should have separate squads for Tests, ODIs and T20Is, with only a few players moving between formats when needed. Ravichandran Ashwin raises questions over injury management at BCCI Centre of Excellence
Ravichandran Ashwin raised concerns about injury management at the VVS Laxman-headed BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and said there should be more accountability when players repeatedly suffer fitness problems.
Ravichandran Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, “I think the time has come to make separate teams for Tests, ODIs and T20Is. There might be cross-pollination of one or two players. I think somewhere down the line there has to be accountability for injury management with the players.”
Currently, the Men in Blue are in Japan for the Asian Games 2026. They played a one-off T20I against Japan on September 22 and won that rain-curtailed match by two runs. Amid this, Ravichandran Ashwin hails Gautam Gambhir over Sanju Samson Selection controversy.
Ravichandran Ashwin questions Varun Chakravarthy’s injury management at NCA
Ashwin has pointed to spinner Varun Chakravarthy as an example after another injury forced him out of his dream assignments. The mystery spinner was ruled out of the Asian Games 2026 and home T20I series against the West Indies after picking up a fresh injury in the first T20I against Afghanistan.
Varun had only made his comeback in that match after recovering from an injury suffered during the England tour. Ashwin revealed that Chakravarthy had spent around three to four months at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for his recovery, so why did he once again get injured?
The former Indian off-spinner added, “I know that Varun Chakravarthy was at the NCA for the last 3-4 months. We were asking for permission for TNPL, and they didn’t release him. He should have returned in a month, but he was there for 2-3 months.”
Ravichandran Ashwin shares shocking lesson from his 2015 injury
Ashwin also stressed that injury management is not only the responsibility of support staff. Players themselves must understand whether their training methods and exercises are suitable for their bodies. He recalled suffering a side strain in 2015 after doing Olympic lifting.
Ashwin stopped doing snatches because he felt the exercise did not suit him despite such exercises can improve speed, strength and power. He believes players need to be careful about their training choices and understand which exercises can increase their injury risk.
He said, “As a player, you also have to see that your training method is correct. Am I doing the right exercises? The only side strain I got in 2015 was due to Olympic lifting. After that, I stopped snatching. You can certainly be faster with Olympic lifting; your power production also increases, but if you have an injury that doesn’t suit you, the player should also watch what he is doing.”
